The year was 1971 and Taz O’Dell and Buddy Kirkner and his sons were getting ready to excavate a bottom field on the banks of Reed Creek ,Barren Springs Va in pulaski county of the New River Valley .
The owners wanted to build a home there and my dad built houses , Buddy owned pulaski tinning company in pulaski that did a multiple types of work , heat pumps , guttering for houses roofs on buisiness ext. Little did they know that their job would never get done or even started. .
As they started to excavate the ground for dad to measure the footers going by the blue prints that were drawn up for the job a couple of bones came out of the ground . Immediately they stopped to investigate farther . With a hour or two they unearthed 3 Indian skeletons still fully in tact one which was 9 feet tall . Stunned and amazed at what they found they contacted the proper authorities and they came out and stopped everything. Dad made a make shift building for them to lay the body’s in untill it was decided what to do. The building dad built is the building in the picture above .
They layed the skeletons out on the tables and within hours the news started getting out about the find . Cars from.everywhere came to see the skeletons , Now you are probably are thinking! YEA RIGHT ! Why haven’t we heard or see these skeletons now ? Oh they were there alright ,I know for a fact they were. Because I seen them as a 12 year old kid . Dad took me there . As we drove near to the place , the cars was lining up . Dad and the owners put up a wire cable across the entrance to the field with 2 wooden barrels one on each side where the owners charged a dollar for each person to see ..hard to tell how many came from everywhere to see them .
Now of course the Smithsonian was contacted and they came and looked and examined them and confiscated the skeletons and took them.away ,susposedly to the Smithsonian institution to keep on display. But somehow they never made it on any display , matter of fact one of buddy’s sons , Tye Kirkner told me only 2 years ago that he was told they took them to another state instead .but then they disappeared never to be known again . Why in the world wouldn’t the government and the Smithsonian want to try and hide something of this great magnitude from the people?.Tye also told me that he can still remember that day and time just like it was yesterday..
So here we are 54 years later and now hardly a soul around even knows of this happening I know there are some that do believe also and actually seen them with their eyes .
Indian lore runs deep in these mountains and hollows of southwest Va , snd Reed creek holds alot in her grounds that’s yet to ge found ..
About 10 years ago or a few more I drove through there and by that field to remember that time my dad took me there . And as I looked down in the field I seen to my surprise that old building my dad built to house those skeletons ! It was still there . Old and weather beaten and the weeds growed up around it , but it was still there , standing the test of time with its haunting memories and the faint crys of the Indians chanting and talking around their camp fires.
What else lays beneath.these Blue Ridge mountain country that’s just waiting for someone to accidently find that will release that history back into the lives of the living today.
